At the time of writing we are merely hours away from the polls opening, and by now millions of words have been written about the battle for the White House by many writers on both sides of the Atlantic. There is one writer though who I think deserves special recognition for her unique contribution to the debate - the estimable Melanie Phillips.
Now it’s fair to say that Mel isn’t the biggest fan of Barack Obama. In fact her distaste for him is profound and long-standing, and she has hardly been short of outlets for it. Back in May in the Jewish Chronicle she was berating Obama-supporting liberal Jews, for whom apparently
voting for a Republican is as unthinkable as eating a ham sandwich on Yom Kippur. Indeed, a number of them would rather eat a ham sandwich on Yom Kippur, because their conviction that religion is bunk and has nothing to do with being Jewish comes second only to their conviction that Republicans are the acme of evil.
An opinion which, unsurprisingly, was not too popular with some of her liberal Jewish readers.
And in July she sent a chill through the hearts of Daily Mail readers with the revelation that Obama is like a young Tony Blair.
It has been on her Spectator blog however that Mel has really excelled herself, with 27 increasing virulent articles on the subject in the last two months. This piece gives a taste of the general tone
a Marxisant [does she know what this means?] radical who all his life has been mentored by, sat at the feet of, worshipped with, befriended, endorsed the philosophy of, funded and been in turn funded, politically promoted and supported by a nexus comprising black power anti-white racists, Jew-haters, revolutionary Marxists, unrepentant former terrorists and Chicago mobsters, is on the verge of becoming President of the United States. And apparently it’s considered impolite to say so.
And on it goes. The usual smears are trotted out (in a piece entitled, without irony, “The politics of mass hysteria”)
the Obama campaign which has tried to steal the vote by delivering more than a million fraudulent voter registrations
(there is a good debunking of so-called ACORN “voter fraud” here)
Obama is labelled anti-American and his views are misrepresented (or plain made up)
Obama thinks world conflicts are basically the west’s fault, and so it must right the injustices it has inflicted….For Obama, however, the real source of evil in the world is America. The evil represented by Iran and the Islamic jihadists is apparently all America’s fault.
And of course, this being Mel, in the same article she can’t resist linking him to those ubiquitous Islamists
many of his connections suggest that that the man who may be elected President of a country upon which the Islamists have declared war is himself firmly in the Islamists’ camp.
In fact for Mel this is nothing as trivial as just a choice between two candidates for the most powerful job in the world. No, the very existence of America and the rest of the civilised world is at stake
if [Obama] wins, US defences will be emasculated at a time of unprecedented international peril and the enemies of America and the free world will seize their opportunity to destroy the west.
Here she approvingly quotes one Walid Phares
I can project a spread of Jihadi sympathizer networks within the country and even throughout many layers of Government. Over four years, and possibly eight, such a growth would become malignant. Over less than a decade, Americans could find themselves in situations never experienced since the Civil War.
In case we haven’t quite got the message the piece is illustrated with a picture of the four horsemen of the apocalypse.
So is Mel totally alone in her crusade to speak the truth about our possible impending doom? Thankfully not - there is indeed a “Western resistance” comprising…”internet journalists, Fox News and talk radio“.
With those doughty defenders of freedom on our side, Liberal Conspiracy readers can sleep tight after all.
