Cleaners demonstration Wednesday

City Hall’s announcement of an increase in the Living Wage to £7.45 does NOT apply to cleaners on the underground. The planned demonstration on Wednesday will go ahead.

From Anne-Marie O’Reilly (Feminist Fightback)

Just to update everyone, City Hall announced an increase in the Living Wage to £7.45 on Thursday. This announcement did NOT apply to cleaners on the underground: http://www.london.gov.uk/view_press_release.jsp?releaseid=17799

However, it seems really likely that an announcement about a Living Wage for Metronet cleaners is announced at Mayor’s questions on Wednesday.

The demo must still go ahead, as this does not effect cleaners working under Tubelines, and the other demands have yet to be won.

The movement towards this announcement has been happening in parallel with really bad victimisation of RMT cleaners across the tube. There is still much to fight for!

Please think about fashioning banners or signs which highlight the other demands (above), ask for the Living Wage for Tubelines cleaners and challenge victimisation of union members and activists, particularly through the use of immigration checks.

If you’re still not convinced by the living wage, check this clip out of a debate we held, Deborah Littmann sets the case
