Yup, it’s our first opportunity to stick one up at Boris Johnson. Since BoJo is banning drinking on the tube from 1st June, it has been suggested by various people (ok, bloggers mostly) that we get together for an almighty piss-up on the 31st of May. It also happens to be a Saturday, which is handy.
A tube-crawl then? Various Liberal Conspirators are already up for this… if any readers want to join us then email me and I’ll let you know where and when. Suggestions for venues gratefully received too.

I should have been clearer. This tube-crawl is primarily for Liberal Conspirators, readers and contributors. Not random Facebookers. Hence I haven’t made it part of another event.

Sadie has asked whether we’ll be going around on the Circle Line or drinking in one place. I think we can do both. Legally. But, apparently, she’ll be part of the rowdy crowd. Let’s not do a Guido, yeah? :)
Would a piss-up be the right way to do it? Surely the best way to stick one up at Boris would be to turn up, have a few, quiet drinks on the tube and then get off. That would show that people can drink responsibly on public transport, undermining the whole premise of the ban…
An even better plan would be to do it on the 1st of June, to prove that it can’t be enforced.
Nah, I won’t be able to come - I’m a smoker, and our kind aren’t allowed to indulge our habit indoors anywhere in public. Not even in a pub where all the customers and staff are smokers themselves. Not even in a private club, come to think of it, so a few hours boozing without a cigarette is something of a personal nightmare.
Not that I recall many people, organising “smoke-ins” to protest that particular ban, likely because it wasn’t introduced by a thick Tory and hence doesn’t qualify as “illiberal”.
Plus, I don’t live in London.

I’m open to either way. We could all meet up in a pub, have a few drinks and say hello to each other… and later on board the Circle Line and go around while behaving ourselves perfectly sensibly.

I don’t know about FR, but I do not think you seriously care about whether a measure is illiberal or not - just about whether it happens to be supported by your allies or enemies.

I’ve already been invited to a similar event being organised by a friend that evening.
I think the key thing is to make sure that everybody behaves themselves and doesn’t get loud and lairy, which would be entirely counter-productive. And that all rubbish is taken with us, rather than left on the trains.
I intend taking along a can of pop and a can of lager, and asking why it is so much more heinous to take a sip from the latter than the former.

Which smoking ban? Not the one on the tube, presumably, which dates from the 1980s, finally banned everywhere after the Kings Cross fire. It’s hard to kill 31 people with a can of lager, after all.

An unfair assessment. We were coming out of corner shops with laden trolleys before the age limit on cigarettes was raised from sixteen to eighteen.

I assume that this was meant for mainly comic effect. People don’t convene for a drinks in order to stamp a savage message into the nose of authority.
