I assume that this was meant for mainly comic effect. People don’t convene for a drinks in order to stamp a savage message into the nose of authority.

Which smoking ban? Not the one on the tube, presumably, which dates from the 1980s, finally banned everywhere after the Kings Cross fire. It’s hard to kill 31 people with a can of lager, after all.

I think the key thing is to make sure that everybody behaves themselves and doesn’t get loud and lairy, which would be entirely counter-productive. And that all rubbish is taken with us, rather than left on the trains.

I intend taking along a can of pop and a can of lager, and asking why it is so much more heinous to take a sip from the latter than the former.

I don’t know about FR, but I do not think you seriously care about whether a measure is illiberal or not - just about whether it happens to be supported by your allies or enemies.

In short, the only thing this stunt would convince me of is your own cynicism and absurdity.

Yeah but the good thing about the Circle Line is that you never have to worry about changing.

An even better plan would be to do it on the 1st of June, to prove that it can’t be enforced.

I’m open to either way. We could all meet up in a pub, have a few drinks and say hello to each other… and later on board the Circle Line and go around while behaving ourselves perfectly sensibly.

Not that I recall many people, organising “smoke-ins” to protest that particular ban, likely because it wasn’t introduced by a thick Tory and hence doesn’t qualify as “illiberal”.
