You're quite right of course, I also support Chris's suggestion: http://www.septicisle.info/2008/05/gordon-brown-politics-and-courage.html

Need to lay off the Toynbee I think...

it’s simply unattainable and completely unrealistic without far more targeted help being provided, and Labour doesn’t have either the will or the funds to do it with. The less said about tax credits, the most hopeless and over-egged panacea of all time, the better.

But isn't Isn't the idea of "targetting" the rationale behind the lunacy of tax credits?
What sort of targetting do you have in mind?

I support Chris Dillow's idea - raise the tax threshold big time, simplify the whole system, scrap tax credits, even if some of the "undeserving" slightly better off benefit as well.

Now I'm mad enough to think that sufficient savings could be found to allow this to happen without raising higher rates of tax.
But if the top rate *had* to be raised to 45% then even I might support it over and above the current system which the poor struggle to navigate.

"Labour’s pledge to end child poverty....(is) simply unattainable"

and it will be until they stop using that stupid "relative poverty" measure. Far better to make the poor richer than to make the rich poorer in the name of cockeyed equality.
