Don't try and engage with or quote Melanie Phillips. You'll just encourage her. I wish that the world could just agree on a pact to collectively ignore her.

"Thankfully it seems we cannot manage ‘absolutely frothing at the mouth bonkers’ even half as well as the other side of the political spectrum, either."

Your post gives it a damn good try though!

"Used car salesmen with a few million to spare have enjoyed free rein to inculcate creationism in evangelical City Academies"

Not really. Science curriculum still had to be adhered to.

"entire Local Education Authorities have been privatised"

Where?

"Existing for-profit educational businesses – laughably known in this country as ‘public schools’, despite being unaffordable for the vast majority of the public – continue to enjoy the tax breaks that go with charitable status, unlike any other businesses of which I am aware."

Public schools are neither legally nor in actuality for-profit (not that for-profit schools within a competitive market would be a bad thing!). When charity registered, all money is re-invested in the schools (some of it into bursary/scholarship funds for the less well off pupils).

Congratulations, comrade, your keeping the crap left-right education debate going!

Who's talking balls? Too late at night to construct a proper response. Read this instead. Much better. Informed comment on the subject.
