Hand of stupidity

Nadine Dorries, the Tory MP for Mid Bedfordshire, is a continual source of comedy material as an anti-abortion campaigner. On Wednesday she wrote The Hand of Hope, a blog-post apparently illustrating a small hand emerging from a uterus. Dr Ben Goldacre at Bad Science points at evidence, including the doctor she quotes in her article, saying it was a hoax.

But this hasn’t stopped this fearless MP from speaking out against the “pro-abortionist lobby”. In a follow-up she cites the “amazing response” she has had about the picture and lamely tries to explain away the discrepancies, which again get explained by Dr Goldacre.

In further amusement to this saga, “leading blogger” Iain Dale, desperate to cover up for his party comrade, links to it and suggests the photographer who took the picture may know better than the actual surgeon. Brilliant. The anti-choice lobby strikes again! The truth will come out soon eventually! All your uterus belong to us.

Two points for Nads -

- If this baby punched a hole through his mother’s uterus, what’s to stop the rest of them doing it? There will be babies punching holes through womb walls all over the world. Their hands will be sticking out.

- surely this baby - being operated on for spina bifida - was anaethetised, as the surgeon indicated? Otherwise - wouldn’t carrying out major surgery on its back be - well, a little cruel?

etc

The woman is mad! Her tactics are so bloody obvious and desperate it’s painful to watch. This story’s been doing the rounds for years, and has long been put to bed (or so I thought), so why is she dredging it up again?

God these people make me sick!

Yep, it’s been doing the rounds for ages, although in the version I saw, the fetus was waving at the camera and chewing a rusk.

Kate - you mean you missed the version where the foetus managed to conduct an entire symphony orchestra?

Could be one and the same, Cath - apparently a few frames on in this sequence, the little guy with the new back pulls out a cello and says Thanks by way of the Elgar.

Can anybody tell me - was Nads ever a real nurse, or just the kind guys order in at parties?

Nads worked as an actual nurse for about three years after finishing her training, before becoming a medical rep in 1981/2, so what little she does know is 25 years out of date.

Interestingly, Cameron is reported to have said about the furore over the chimaera provisions in HT&E:

If anyone misleads anyone about this Bill then clearly that’s wrong

Anyone up for asking Dave whether he’ll be telling her to shut up.

Maybe the next time that Dave’s pulling Nads’ nightie over her head, he could just leave it there….?
